Ph.D. opportunity starting in August 2026

The mineral physics lab at the School of Earth and Space Exploration at Arizona State University invites applications for graduate student positions toward a Ph.D. degree for spring admissions, starting in August 2026.

Research will focus on planetary materials at high pressures and high temperatures to understand atmosphere-interior interaction across a range of planetary settings, from rocky planets to water-rich or hydrogen-rich planets.

Supported projects include training in laser-heated diamond-anvil cell work, multi-anvil press experiments, laser-driven dynamic compression, synchrotron X-ray techniques, X-ray free-electron laser methods, laser spectroscopy, and electron microscopy.

Candidates with strong interests in Earth science, planetary science, and astrophysics are encouraged to apply. SESE offers broad collaborative opportunities across Earth science, geophysics, astrophysics, and systems engineering.
